CREATE YOUR OWN JUTE WEAVE BENCH WITH RYOBI ONE+TOOLS

If you are looking at this bench and thinking is this something I can actually build myself, or how do I even begin? The answer is YES, and it's simple! I am here to help you through it- step by step via the blog and video, with complete how-to instructions and everything you will possibly need!

This bench has been created all from a crazy idea I had in mind some time ago, and I am excited that I have finally brought it to life; and now able to share it with all of you!

I have added in the online links for Bunnings for all of the items I used/you require- to make it easier for you to grab all the materials you need in one spot!

WOOD

(Wood Type 1) For the legs

You will need 1 piece of pine at 2.4m in length and 1 piece of pine at 1.2m in length per below, unless you can find a single piece approx. 3m long.

Qty: 40cm total length (cut into 1 x 40cm piece)

OTHER MATERIALS

Dowel

I just used some I had lying around at home, which you might also have from excess in flat packs etc- but this one is pretty much what I used. You only need two of these to attach the base to the bottom of the seat

QTY: 2

Brackets

These are tiny little brackets to help prevent any side to side swaying and reinforce the bench seat. I put these on, as the bench seat is located in the playroom and I am sure will be climbed on continually.

QTY: 4

Mending plate to reinforce join

This is optional, but I do recommend this. I decided I would add this on to reinforce the corners due to the slim line design of the seat.

TIME TO GET STARTED

STEP 1:

Start with measuring and cutting all the pieces you need per the below:

4 X 25cm out of the leg pine (Wood Type 1)

4 X 41cm out of leg pine (Wood Type 1)

2 x 40.5cm out of the end and base support (Wood Type 2)

1 X 112cm out of end and base support (Wood Type 2)

2 X 120cm out of sides (Wood Type 3)

1 x 40cm for Shelf (Wood Type 4)- create semi circle by tracing around a large bucket or bowl that goes edge to edge of the 40cm piece of wood

44 X 55cm Jute

10 x 145cm Jute

Use a measuring square so you can easily achieve straight lines for accurate cutting

Line up your measured markings (lines) with your Ryobi ONE+ Mitre Saw and cut all your pieces to size

You should end up with 12 pieces in total resembling the configuration above. Plus, the base piece of 112cm. It isn't pictured in this photo, as I didn't cut it until the end as I had to work out the size once assembled to write these instructions

Assemble your wood as per above. The two left hand sections are the legs. (Please note the shorter sides sit inside the longer sides) The right hand side configuration is the bench seat frame.

Next cut your shelf with the Ryobi ONE+ jigsaw. Use a really large bowl or bucket and trace around it to create your semi circle. You will need to have the setting on 2 to cut a curved edge.

Please note that you will need to sand this prior to installing on the bench, so don't forget this step

Now to get to putting it all together! Lay out your pieces like so for the legs. Longer piece on top. Shorter sides- one each side standing up

Mark your pre-drill spots. By pre-drilling, it will help prevent the wood from splitting when you pop your screws in

Pre drill with a smaller drill piece to the screw you are using, then pop in your screws (75mm) and drive in with your Ryobi One+ drill. Repeat until the legs are completely assembled and all 16 screws have been used up.

Once your legs are together, you can place the sides of your seat frame on top to get an idea how it will all look. Not too much further to go now!

Pop your seat frame on the floor. Place your assembled legs on each end, and measure all the way around per above to ensure it is all evenly spaced from the edges and the same on each corner

Once your areas are measured, mark the wood on the corner as above and clamp onto the legs. This will help ensure nothing has moved and you can cross check prior to drilling

Flip over the leg with the end of the clamped seat frame and it should resemble the picture above. Mark your holes evenly and pre-drill. Use a 50mm screw and pop them in place. Do this to both sides.

Now it is time to add the sides!

Once again clamp, pre-drill and screw into place with the 50mm screws. How good does it look!

Now for the minor touches before the weaving gets popped on.

To add the base support. Pop a cross on the end of the base piece (WOOD 3) Drill the centre where the cross meets to fit your dowel piece. Do this on both ends

On the bench seat, measure on the inside of the legs as follows, 1.5cm up and 17cm in. Drill with the same drill piece. Pop in a touch of wood glue, and your dowling. Put into place.

Now to add some reinforcements

Flip your bench seat upside down. Pop on your mending plates, pre-drill, then screw in with the 16mm screws

Do this on each corner. Using 8 screws in total

Use your little white angle bracket and pop it into the inner corner of the legs and pre-drill and screw into place with your 16mm screws

Do this on each corner, using the 16 mm screws until you have used up the 8 screws

It is now fully assembled! Now it is time to add putty if you choose, and give it a good sand with your Ryobi ONE+ orbital sander and Ryobi ONE+ Multi plus Tool

Finishing touches! Time to add the Weave! You will need 44 pieces to go across. I slid them into place like so, then stapled on each side, ensuring it was pulling tight on the finishing side

Flip it over and start working on the cross weave. I weaved all the way across first, then tipped it over and stapled. Cut off any excess Jute once you have finished sanding.

Last step is to install the shelf!

With your bench still upside down, pop your cut semi circle on one end underneath the edge. Pre-drill and screw on with the 16mm screws x 2.

And voila here is your masterpiece!
